🏠 Four Steps From Putting It Off to a Fixed Price

You’ve said it before: We really should do something about that porch, that creaky floor, or that room that’s just one wall short of working. JOMA Construction, an Athens remodeling company founded by John Newland and his wife, Marielle, in 2005 (JOMA = John + Marielle), has a four-step process to help turn those plans into reality.

Step one: Start with a free consultation. Bring your questions and ideas. JOMA can handle the design in-house, including 3D computer renderings, so you can visualize the project before construction begins.

Step two: Get your Initial Cost Range. Based on more than 200 job parameters and data from over 1,000 completed JOMA projects, this estimate gives you a starting point grounded in real-world costs. Allowances fill in for selections you haven't made yet, with final costs adjusted as you choose your materials and finishes.

Step three: Work out the details. The Pre-Build Agreement covers plan approval, selections with a Pre-Build Coordinator, and the regulatory process.

Step four: Sign the contract. You'll receive your fixed price before signing, so you know the cost upfront.

Once construction starts, an online portal keeps you in the loop with project updates, photo progress reports, change approvals, and direct communication with your project manager.

JOMA serves homes within roughly 25 minutes of its office at 344 Moose Club Drive. Ready to get that project moving? Request a consultation online anytime or call 706-372-1052.

🏫 Clarke schools seek five more years to expand career training

The Gist: The Clarke County Board of Education voted unanimously Oct. 8 to let the district apply for another five years as a charter school system. State approval would let the district keep extra funding and flexibility to hire industry professionals as teachers and offer different school models. The new contract would begin July 1, 2027.

Why It Matters: Students at the Athens Community Career Academy already learn health care, welding and hospitality from industry professionals. The district plans a carpentry pathway at the former West Broad School and wants to offer a diploma tied to paid work experience. Its renewal proposal also lists Montessori programs, small schools and a science, technology, engineering, arts and math magnet school as possible options for families.

What's Next: The application is due Nov. 2. State education officials are expected to review it and interview district leaders before the State Board of Education decides whether to approve the renewal.

Here's the part most remodeling stories skip: the price tag.

Next Kitchen and Bath, a boutique remodeler serving homeowners in Clarke and Oconee counties, puts the numbers upfront. Full kitchen remodels typically range from $75,000 to $250,000, while partial refreshes generally fall between $25,000 and $30,000.

What makes the process more personal? One person oversees the entire project. Owner Wendy Ritchey handles the design, project management, and contractor coordination herself, meaning the person who listens to your ideas is also the one who turns them into a plan.

If you're considering a full kitchen remodel with a budget starting around $75,000, head to Next Kitchen and Bath's website and fill out the inquiry form. Share your name, email, phone number, and project details, and Wendy will follow up with a call.
