💵 Athens voters could pay more sales tax and less property tax
The Gist: The Athens-Clarke Commission put a five-year, 1% sales tax on the Nov. 3 ballot. If voters approve it, sales tax would rise from 8% to 9% on Jan. 1, 2027. The new revenue could only reduce property taxes on homes, rental properties and businesses in Athens-Clarke County, Winterville and the county portion of Bogart.
Why It Matters: On a $250,000 home, the county estimates savings of $160 to $220 in 2027 and $320 to $440 in later years, depending on exemptions. UGA professor Alex Combs says sales taxes take a larger share of lower-income households' earnings, while landlords have little incentive to pass their property tax savings to renters.
What's Next: The referendum is scheduled for November 3. If voters approve it, the first property tax reductions would appear on fall 2027 bills.
