Meet George: The Twelve Week Old Puppy That Needs a Home
George is just twelve weeks old! He plays hard, naps harder, wags through every meal, and starts every morning curled up against his brother.
George needs a home of his own. If you take him, nothing is final for two weeks. Tails of Tallassee Rescue (TOTR) holds the adoption fee during the trial and gives back every dollar if the two of you turn out not to fit. They would rather you find that out in your own living room.
Until then, George sleeps in a volunteer's house. Every dog Tails of Tallassee Rescue (TOTR) takes in does, because they don't use kennels. So they can only rescue as many dogs as there are Athens families willing to keep one for a while.
Hannah Costantino started Tails of Tallassee Rescue (TOTR) in February. She's a nurse at Piedmont. She runs the rescue with three other women, all of them volunteers, and together they have found homes for 12 dogs since the first week of March.
That's what they need from you, and it's smaller than it sounds. You decide how long. Two weeks counts. It costs you nothing: they buy the food, the crate, and the bed, they pay the vet directly, and they pay you back for gas at the business rate instead of the charity rate. If it isn't working, they come get the dog within 24 hours and you never have to explain why.
If a dog in the house isn't possible, the other thing they need is money. It costs about $1,000 to take one dog from unvaccinated and full of worms to fully vetted, fixed, and on monthly prevention. Eighty-five dollars a month covers a dog for a year. TOT is a registered 501(c)(3), so your donation is tax-deductible!

🚨 Clyde Responds to ICE Activity in Athens
Following recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity in Athens, Rep. Andrew Clyde released a statement voicing support for ICE officers, calling them "American heroes" and saying they are welcome in Athens and across Georgia, as they protect against brutal tragedies like the murder of Laken Riley. His statement came after WUGA requested a response amid reports of multiple detentions in the area.
Why It Matters: The statement adds a federal lawmaker's perspective to an issue that has sparked significant discussion and response throughout the Athens community.

🍽 UGA Study Highlights Food Access Gaps Across Georgia
A new University of Georgia study found that people experiencing food insecurity may have the hardest time accessing food assistance in higher-income communities, where food pantries and aid organizations are less common. Researchers also identified transportation as a major barrier and recommended better coordination among food banks.
Why It Matters: The findings could help shape how food assistance programs and community resources are distributed across Georgia, including areas where need may be less visible.

There's a 20-Year-Old Theater in Watkinsville That Most of Athens Has Never Heard Of
The Stage Oconee sits just south of Athens, and this fall they open their 20th season with eight shows: Steel Magnolias, Narnia, Shrek, The Wizard of Oz, and four more.
They call themselves family-oriented rather than family-friendly, which means the kids' shows are actually for kids and the adult shows are actually for adults.
Wendy Oesterle has run the place for three years and spent forty years in theater, and she says people walk out comparing it to what they've paid to see at the Fox.
You don't have to sit in the audience, either. Steel Magnolias has an all-women cast and auditions run August 22 to 23, the six-week skill classes are open to adults, and they always need people who can run a light board or sew a costume.
