🚑 Athens ambulance map allows longer response times in some neighborhoods
The Gist: National EMS uses a map that classifies Riverbend, Green Acres and Crestwood, Winterville, areas west of Whitehead Road and most of Atlanta Highway outside the Loop as non-urban. From April through June, its ambulances averaged three minutes slower on 911 calls in those areas and had no unit available 19 times.
Why It Matters: The map gives National EMS a 13-minute benchmark in neighborhoods it calls non-urban, compared with nine minutes in its urban zone. ACC Fire uses the nine-minute standard countywide and met it with nearly a minute to spare during the same quarter.
What's Next: Commissioner Carol Myers requested National EMS' raw response-time data and asked the county to replace the map.
