🚂 College Avenue housing plan leaves the 9-foot trestle untouched
The Gist: A 156-unit housing project at the former Quality Block site must add six inches of clearance beneath the unused Athens Line trestle, bringing it to 13 feet 6 inches for fire trucks. The active CSX trestle just south has 9 feet of clearance, regularly damages box trucks and is not part of the work.
Why It Matters: The work would give fire trucks access to the project's 374 bedrooms, but the lower bridge that drivers keep striking would stay unchanged.
What's Next: Engineers must decide whether to raise the trestle or lower the road. The fix must finish before any unit is occupied.

📱 Many new downtown parking signs have been cut from their poles
The Gist: The Athens Downtown Development Authority replaced 800 solar-powered meters with ParkMobile signs in August. Within weeks, many signs had been cut from their poles; police said Sept. 11 that they had felony warrants for two people, with no arrests yet.
Why It Matters: Street parking now depends on the posted QR codes, the ParkMobile app or its website. Drivers who want to use cash or a card can park in the College Avenue or Washington Street deck, where the first hour is free.
