📆 Something New: the Athens Scoop Events Calendar!

I’ve wanted to build a proper events calendar for Athens Scoop for a while. There are so many good things happening around Athens, but they’re scattered across Instagram posts, flyers, Facebook pages, and word of mouth, and I usually hear about half of them after they’re over.

So we made one place to find them.

We’ve been working hard on the new Athens Scoop Events Calendar, and it’s finally ready for you to use.

If you’re looking for something to do, you can browse by day, search by event, venue, or performer, and narrow things down by category, area, this weekend, or free events. Each event page has the time, address, price, and ticket or RSVP link.

Anyone can add their event to the calendar. There’s also optional promotion spots if you want more people to see it.

My hope is that this becomes the first place you check when you’re deciding what to do in Athens, and an easy way for local organizers to get the word out.

It’s new, so if you try it and notice something missing or confusing, reply to this email and tell me so I can make it even better.

🚷 Sidewalk Ordinance Draws Public Input

Athens-Clarke County commissioners are considering a proposed ordinance that would prohibit public camping, as well as lying or sleeping on sidewalks and other public spaces. During a recent public meeting, residents shared differing opinions, with some supporting the proposal as a way to improve public safety and sidewalk accessibility, while others raised concerns about how it could affect people experiencing homelessness. The commission has not made a final decision on the ordinance.

Why It Matters: The proposal could affect public spaces throughout Athens and has sparked debate over balancing sidewalk accessibility, public safety, and support for people experiencing homelessness.

🗞️ The Red and Black Announces Sale and Upcoming Move

After almost 30 years on Baxter Street, The Red & Black announced it is selling its headquarters and relocating to the historic Bottleworks complex located at 297 Prince Avenue. The move is part of the nonprofit's long-term plan to strengthen its financial future while continuing its news coverage and student journalism programs.

Why It Matters: The move marks a new chapter for one of Athens' longest-running news organizations as it invests in its future while continuing to serve the Athens and UGA communities.
