About The National

The National opened in 2007 at 232 W Hancock Avenue in downtown Athens as a collaboration between Hugh Acheson and Peter Dale. The restaurant brought Mediterranean flavors to the Classic City with a farm to table foundation, and it quickly became one of the most respected dining rooms in Athens, GA. The food draws from Spanish, Middle Eastern, and Southern traditions, a combination that sounds ambitious but lands gracefully on the plate. Seasonality drives the menu at The National. Summer brings chilled soups and lighter fare made with local produce, while the cooler months see heartier plates that lean into the richness of Mediterranean cooking. The tapas style offerings are ideal for sharing, and the entrees reward people who want a more composed meal. The wine and cocktail program is thoughtful and well matched to the food. Acheson departed ownership during the pandemic, and Peter Dale now runs the restaurant. Dale was there from the beginning, having helped open The National in 2007, and the transition preserved the spirit and quality of the kitchen. If anything, the restaurant has settled more deeply into its identity under Dale's stewardship. The dining room is elegant without being stuffy. The building has character, and the atmosphere lands in a sweet spot between special occasion and comfortable neighborhood spot. Dinner service runs Monday through Saturday, with lunch available Wednesday through Saturday. The National sits just down the street from Creature Comforts and within easy walking distance of the 40 Watt Club and Georgia Theatre. Reservations are a good idea, particularly on weekends and game day weekends. Pricing sits in the $$ to $$$ range, which is fair for what you get.

Athens Scoop says: The tapas are the move. Order four or five for the table and let the kitchen show you what it does.

Super good food, and lovely people. I have always enjoyed going there but it can be a long wait to receive food . My favorite part is their dinner, but the chicken salad lunch was soo good. The place is not very pretty, not too fancy looking but it is so cozy.

If I could give more than 5 stars, I would. Our server, Lucy, was a breath of fresh air and took care of us like we were family. She was a consummate professional, appearing quietly at our side to refill beverages, offer more guidance, and explain menu details. The food was delicious. Our party of 5 had different offerings and we were all so pleased. The food was served attractively and all of the unique ingredients blended extremely well together. The atmosphere was quietly elegant and the price point was, in my opinion, fabulous.

Overall pretty good. Kinda on the pricey side, but you get a lot of food for what you pay for so it's worth it if you look at it from that perspective. The biggest surprise from the menu was definitely the Stuffed Medjool Dates. I didn't expect it to be as good as it was. The restaurant is advertised as having "Mediterranean-style dished created with seasonal, southern influences". However, I would argue that these dishes are far more southern then they are Mediterranean. This is by no means a bad thing if that is your desire you will not be disappointed! However, for me personally, I would have preferred a menu more on the Mediterranean side.
