About South Kitchen + Bar
South Kitchen + Bar occupies one of the most beautiful dining rooms in Athens, and the food matches the setting. The restaurant is housed in a historic building on E Washington Street with original marble columns, stained glass windows, chandeliers, and Greek tile flooring. Walking in feels like stepping into a different era, but the menu is firmly modern Southern with a creative edge. The culinary team, led by Chefs Jacob Blackwell, Amanda Scott, and Robert Abney, turns out dishes that honor Southern traditions while pushing them forward. The Iron Skillet Tots tossed in duck fat have won awards. The Shrimp and Grits are among the best in Athens. The Bone In Berkshire Pork Chop is a signature for good reason. The kitchen treats every plate with intention, and it shows across the entire menu. The beverage program is equally serious. South Kitchen has two sommeliers on staff and craft beer experts who keep the tap list interesting. The cocktail menu rotates with the seasons and complements the food naturally. What makes South Kitchen work as well as it does is the balance between the elegance of the space and the accessibility of the experience. Pricing is surprisingly affordable given the quality and the setting. Lunch entrees are well under $20, and dinner remains reasonable for what amounts to one of the best dining experiences in downtown Athens. South Kitchen is open daily, with brunch service on Saturday and Sunday mornings. The E Washington Street location is in the heart of downtown, walkable from campus and most downtown hotels. Reservations are recommended for dinner and essential on game day weekends.

I had a wonderful dining experience at South Kitchen + Bar. The food was outstanding—beautifully prepared and full of flavor. The cocktail was perfectly balanced and thoughtfully made, the kind you slow down for because it’s just right. What really tied it all together was the service: friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming without ever feeling rushed. A relaxed, enjoyable evening from start to finish. I’ll absolutely be back.

This place is so good. The food is food, the atmosphere is good, and the service is phenomenal. The restaurant was not too busy when we came in to eat, just enough people for a moderate noise level. I ordered the Hot Chicken Sandwich and my friend ordered the three sides. We had a great server, Cam, who also is the bartender. He was attentive and helpful with the menu. This place is a great restaurant downtown. I would definitely return & recommend.

South Kitchen + Bar in Athens, GA is a fantastic stop for anyone craving elevated Southern comfort food in a stunning historic setting. The building itself is worth the visit—exposed brick, tall arched windows, and stained-glass accents give the space a warm, timeless feel. The fried chicken was crispy, perfectly seasoned, and plated with classic sides like collard greens, sweet potato mash, and buttery rolls. The Philly cheese with mushroom gravy were rich and full of flavor, especially paired with their creamy corn. Even the quesadilla was impressive—loaded, well-seasoned, and finished with a flavorful drizzle. Portions are generous without feeling heavy, and everything arrived hot and well prepared. Service was friendly, quick, and attentive without being rushed. The bar area is a highlight too, with its stained-glass windows and a strong selection of spirits—great spot to relax before or after dinner. If you’re exploring downtown Athens or looking for a solid place for comfort food with style, South Kitchen + Bar checks every box. We’ll definitely be back.
