About 1785 Bar and Grill

1785 Bar and Grill at 420 East Clayton Street in downtown Athens, GA takes its name from the year the University of Georgia was chartered as the first state chartered university in the United States. The venue, previously known as Jerzees Sports Bar, was rebranded with the 1785 name and identity that ties it directly to Athens' unique relationship with UGA. The bar and grill offers a wide variety of entertainment with nightly specials and programming, screens for watching games, a dance floor, and food service. The E Clayton Street location places 1785 on one of downtown Athens' most active blocks, surrounded by bars, restaurants, and the foot traffic that flows through the entertainment district every night of the week. With 87 reviews at a 3.9 star rating, 1785 caters primarily to the college nightlife crowd with a flexible format that works for grabbing food during the day, watching a game in the evening, or dancing late into the night. Hours run Monday through Wednesday from 7 PM to 2 AM and Thursday through Saturday from 8 PM onward. The downtown Athens nightlife scene has dozens of options, and 1785 fills a specific niche as a bar and grill that combines food, drinks, sports, and dancing under one roof on Clayton Street.

I went to the bar with a group of friends this past weekend and the bouncer at the front door had the nerve to tell me that what I was wearing was not appropriate. His words were “ I don’t have a problem with it but the owner is lowkey racist and will kick females out if they are wearing something provocative.” He said this after the first bouncer already checked my id and gave me the good to go. He said he isn’t supposed to let me in but he did anyway after explaining that my skirt and see through shirt was inappropriate. Mind you, I had a tank top underneath my MESH top and I even had stockings under my skirt. Conservative but definitely bar night attire. I don’t know if this was me being racially profiled because he seemed to be a minority as well but I am just hung up over the fact that he opened his mouth to tell me why he shouldn’t let me enter the bar.. but let me in anyway? Me and my friends didn’t feel right giving the bar our money so we immediately left. We stood outside trying to figure out if we should confront the owner. I’ve been going to this bar for 3 years, and I’ve seen other females dressed in more revealing clothing than I was wearing. I won’t be coming here again. I am both hurt and surprised by this crazy encounter. As a female I should not being having a discussion with a man about what I am wearing if it does not concern him. He didn’t say it in a rude way but it was just an awful experience and quite embarrassing on his part.. other girls around me were standing up for me.
