🗳️ Athens voters face a sales-tax increase to cut property taxes
The Gist: On Nov. 3, Athens-Clarke voters will decide whether to raise the sales tax from 8% to 9% starting Jan. 1, 2027. The proposed Floating Local Option Sales Tax, or FLOST, would run for five years, with proceeds used exclusively to reduce local government property taxes.
Why It Matters: Shoppers would pay $10 more per $1,000 in taxable purchases. Property-tax reductions would cover rental and commercial properties as well as owner-occupied homes, with the amount tied to sales-tax collections.
What's Next: If approved, the first property-tax reductions would appear on fall 2027 bills, based on six months of collections.
