Scuba diving is one of those things a lot of people think looks incredible but never actually try because they have no idea where to start.
That’s where Dolphin Dive Center comes in. The local Athens dive shop has been helping beginners get underwater since 1999, with certification courses designed to take first-timers from the classroom to the pool and eventually into instructor-led checkout dives.
You don't need to already be an experienced adventurer, either. No previous scuba certification is required, and the beginner Open Water course is available to people 12 and older who are comfortable in the water and healthy enough to dive.
It could be a new hobby, a goal you've always put off, or simply something different to do with your partner, family, or friends. And with classes running every month, you don't have to wait until next summer to get started.

🚲 Athens approves planning for 20 bike and pedestrian corridors
The Gist: The Mayor and Commission voted 8-0 to accept the 2026 Athens in Motion plan and let staff start concept and feasibility work on 20 priority corridors. The list includes Hawthorne Avenue, Baxter Street, Vine Street, Barnett Shoals Road and South Milledge Avenue.
Why It Matters: ACCGov has $1.2 million available for priority bike and pedestrian projects, but the vote does not commit Athens to construction. Each project still needs feasibility work, funding and another commission approval.
What's Next: Transportation staff will identify funding and develop concepts before returning individual projects to commissioners.

🗳️ Athens seeks one resident for a Board of Elections term
The Gist: ACCGov is accepting applications from Athens-Clarke County residents for one partial term on the Board of Elections, running through Dec. 31, 2028. The deadline is Friday, Sept. 11.
Why It Matters: The five-member board oversees local primaries and elections, voter registration and absentee-ballot procedures.
What's Next: Apply online by Sept. 11. Interviews are tentatively set for Sept. 21, and commissioners plan to appoint someone Oct. 6.
