๐ญ Steel Magnolias Opens One Week From Today
Put October 23 to 25 on your calendar. The Stage Oconee is staging Steel Magnolias in Watkinsville, the story of a group of women in a small-town Louisiana beauty salon.
It is a family-oriented community theatre, and much of the fun is seeing your neighbors on stage. Performance times and tickets are on the website.

๐ฅ Working Out but Not Seeing Progress? Start With Four Free Classes
People plateau when their workouts have no plan behind them. Orangetheory Fitness Athens builds every class around one, with heart-rate-targeted intervals, strength options and the Orange 60 under one roof.
The programming is tested internally for results and curated by PhD physiologists. Every coach holds national certifications, the Orangetheory certification and CPR training, and four of them have been coaching for 10 years.
Heart-rate monitoring shows exactly what you put out, from sweat and calories to heart rate. With about 65 classes a week there is always a spot, and strength-only classes rotate upper body, lower body and full body from Monday to Sunday.
Then there is the community. The studio has 700+ members, ages 18 to 74, and 100+ of them have been coming for 10 years. They meet outside the studio too, at monthly social activities.
Athens Scoop readers can claim four free Orangetheory classes. Fill out the short form, and the studio will follow up with details.

๐ Athens plans to end paper building-permit applications January 1st
The Gist: Athens-Clarke County's Building Permits & Inspections Department extended its paper-application deadline. Residents, contractors and developers can still submit paper applications at 120 W. Dougherty St. through December 31. The department is scheduled to require all permit submissions through its online portal starting January 1, 2027. Planning and Transportation and Public Works permits still use separate processes.
Why It Matters: After the deadline, anyone applying for a building permit in Athens would need to use the portal. Applicants can already pay fees without an extra processing charge and check the status of permits and inspections there. The county says the switch should cut paperwork and processing time.
What's Next: The online-only rule is scheduled to take effect January 1, 2027.

๐ญ New to Theatre? A Watkinsville Stage Open to Every Age and Level
Some people love theatre from the audience, others dream of taking the spotlight, and some prefer working behind the scenes. The Stage Oconee in Watkinsville has a place for all three. Now in its 20th season, the community theatre offers programming for all ages, from six-week skill classes to large-scale community productions.
Classes and workshops help participants develop their acting, singing, and movement skills at any level, while volunteers can pitch in behind the scenes with lighting, costumes, and more.
Cost doesn't have to keep anyone out of the spotlight either. The Stage's scholarship program helps make participation possible for performers of all ages, regardless of their financial circumstances.
With community at the heart of its mission, The Stage welcomes newcomers whether they want to perform, lend a hand, or simply enjoy a show. Classes, auditions, and volunteer opportunities are listed on its website.
